Suppression of Chaos at Slow Variables by Rapidly Mixing Fast Dynamics through Linear Energy-preserving Coupling

Abstract. Chaotic multiscale dynamical systems are common in many areas of science, one of the examples being the interaction of the low-frequency dynamics in the atmosphere with the fast turbulent weather dynamics. One of the key questions about chaotic multiscale systems is how the fast dynamics affects chaos at the slow variables, and, therefore, impacts uncertainty and predictability of the slow dynamics. Here we demonstrate that the linear slow-fast coupling with the total energy conservation property promotes the suppression of chaos at the slow variables through the rapid mixing at the fast variables, both theoretically and through numerical simulations. A suitable mathematical framework is developed, connecting the slow dynamics on the tangent subspaces to the infinite-time linear response of the mean state to a constant external forcing at the fast variables. Additionally, it is shown that the uncoupled dynamics for the slow variables may remain chaotic while the complete multiscale system loses chaos and becomes completely predictable at the slow variables through increasing chaos and turbulence at the fast variables. This result contradicts the common sense intuition, where, naturally, one would think that coupling a slow weakly chaotic system with another much faster and much stronger mixing system would result in general increase of chaos at the slow variables.

Several prototype models are introduced here which are designed to elucidate the interaction between heteroclinic low-dimensional chaos in the projected nonlinear dynamics and intrinsic stochasticity induced by energy exchange with a bath of fast variables. These models are built by coupling a four-dimensional ODE with known analytical properties including heteroclinic cycles with a suitable de...
متن کاملHow the chaos and predictability of slow variables in a multiscale system are affected by coupling to the strongly chaotic and rapidly mixing
My research interests lie in the intersection of applied dynamical systems, multiscale dynamics, and mathematical methods for climate change. Climate is characterized by statistics of slow patterns of multiscale dynamics where the time scales range from months (or even years) to hours, and predicting its change poses a significant scientific, mathematical and computational challenge. Among othe...

Abstract. Multiscale dynamics are ubiquitous in applications of modern science. Because of time scale separation between relatively small set of slowly evolving variables and (typically) much larger set of rapidly changing variables, direct numerical simulations of such systems often require relatively small time discretization step to resolve fast dynamics, which, in turn, increases computatio...
متن کاملOn passage through resonances in volume-preserving systems.
Resonance processes are common phenomena in multiscale (slow-fast) systems. In the present paper we consider capture into resonance and scattering on resonance in 3D volume-preserving multiscale systems. We propose a general theory of those processes and apply it to a class of kinematic models inspired by viscous Taylor-Couette flows between two counter-rotating cylinders. We describe the pheno...
متن کاملThermalization of a Brownian particle via coupling to low-dimensional chaos.
It is shown that a paradigm of classical statistical mechanics — the thermalization of a Brownian particle — has a low-dimensional, deterministic analogue: when a heavy, slow system is coupled to fast deterministic chaos, the resultant forces drive the slow degrees of freedom toward a state of statistical equilibrium with the fast degrees. This illustrates how concepts useful in statistical mec...
